Magic Lives in Sherwood Forest

The warmest temperatures of the weekend arrived just in time for Electric Forest’s final two days, bringing with them an energy that could only come from more than 40,000 people realizing their time in Sherwood Forest was drawing to an end.

As the festival reached its peak, the Forest Family bonds that had been forming all weekend deepened into something truly special, with every set feeling more exciting and every connection more precious.

Before the music even started, this year’s “Unlock the Forest” theme had already begun weaving its magic throughout the weekend, creating layers of discovery that went far beyond the performances themselves.

Standing 31 feet tall at the heart of Sherwood Forest, the Victorian-era style metal key centerpiece represented more than just this year’s theme, it embodied the spirit of discovery that defines Electric Forest.

The intricate sculpture, which took 401 hours to complete, was crafted by Jacob Smith, a custom motorcycle builder and metal artist from Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Smith had never been to Electric Forest before designing the key, and he never saw it fully standing until it took its place among the trees. “I think it’s a beautiful thing,” he said in an interview with Electric Forest Radio. “Different scene than I’m used to but it’s beautiful seeing so much positive energy.”

To go along with the centerpiece there were 8,000 sequentially numbered keys designed by Norman Ruth and his team at Deluxe Design out of Texas. These smaller keys found their way into festival-goers’ hands throughout the weekend, some distributed as attendees entered the gates, while others handed out randomly throughout the forest and campgrounds.

Each day, the Electric Forest mobile app revealed winning numbers, calling the chosen to venture deep into Sherwood Forest to the Gifting Grove. With only 30 keys selected daily across the four-day festival, the odds of hearing your number called were roughly one in 67.

The gifts themselves varied wildly: epic experiences like front-of-house viewing for headliner sets, private bathrooms at each stage, rare keepsakes from the Forest, and missions that asked winners to pass the magic forward to unexpected strangers.

The gift of giving is a reminder that many gifts are not meant to be kept, but rather shared. The theme perfectly encapsulated what makes Electric Forest special: the understanding that the most meaningful discoveries often come not from what you seek, but from what finds you when you’re open to the magic all around.

Sherwood Forest itself served as a living canvas for artistic discovery and connection with nature and other humans. Throughout the weekend, festival-goers wandered deeper into the woods to uncover layers of interactive art installations that transformed the natural landscape into something truly magical.

Performance artists roamed the pathways, creating moments of theater and wonder that could only be discovered by those willing to venture off the beaten path.

These encounters, combined with the carefully curated art installations, reinforced why veteran attendees often say the real headliner of Electric Forest is the forest itself.

One of the festival’s most emotional experiences, nestled in a peaceful corner of Sherwood Forest, is the Reincarnation Village. This village is the home to a display of luminaries lit with LED candles that are dedicated to spirits and loved ones who couldn’t join the festival.

Born from the story of Steve Fanning, a crew member who worked on Rothbury Festival in 2008 and died while selflessly saving friends from an apartment fire, the Luminaria project allows attendees to create memorial tributes that light up the forest at night.

These illuminated messages serve as vessels of communication, connecting festival-goers with those being remembered and creating a deeply spiritual space within the celebration.

The Call of Joy phone booth was created by Jessica and John Winters through Electric Forest’s Plug-In Program in 2023 and offered a different kind of connection.

Based on research that shows how sharing memories can improve mental health, this iconic red telephone booth invited festival-goers to step inside and share treasured memories or listen to messages from others. The installation quickly became a beloved fixture where strangers connected through shared joy.

There are very few places on earth where people get the chance to let go of the world and become one with themselves and nature. Electric Forest is one of those places. Whether it’s through leaving a message at the Call of Joy, or letting it out during a set from your favorite artists, there really is something for everyone.

Sunday afternoon brought Electric Forest’s annual pride celebration to Carousel Club, transforming the intimate venue into a vibrant display of love, acceptance, and community.

The celebration featured comedy, drag performances, inclusive messaging, and performances throughout the day that honored the LGBTQ+ community’s contributions to electronic music culture.

As the festival drew to its close, Dixon’s Violin provided the perfect meditative finale at Honeycomb. The almost spiritual performance gave everyone a moment to simply relax and absorb everything happening around them, creating space for reflection in the final moments of the festival.

Even though it departed from Electric Forest’s typical electronic and jam band lineup, Dixon has been part of Electric Forest since the beginning, and has always provided a unique experience.

Using his own software creation to craft unique looping sets, every song evolves into something new and unique, a perfect element for the ever-evolving forest. His sets capture the emotion and beauty of this festival and are best enjoyed in the movement.

This year’s final set for Dixon’s Violin was at Honeycomb, and it felt like an even more perfect ending than past years. It was a chance to be present in the final moments as festival-goers gazed out into the trees from Honeycomb’s platforms one last time this year.

Happy tears were everywhere as “Happy Forest” echoed through the crowd, friends embracing for the final time until next year. Spreading the positive energy that only the forest can create, and reminding everyone to take this energy beyond the trees and share it with the world.

Whether this was your first time or you’ve been here since Rothbury Festival, the time spent in Sherwood Forest creates memories that will last a lifetime.

There’s something so uniquely powerful about Electric Forest that transcends the music, the art, and even the magical space itself – it’s a way for strangers to become family over four days in the Michigan woods that so many call home.

As festival-goers packed up their campsites and prepared to leave their temporary home at the Double JJ Resort, the post-Forest emotions that veteran attendees know all too well began to set in.

It’s a bittersweet feeling that hits every year without fail – the overwhelming gratitude for the experience coupled with the sadness of leaving the magic behind.

Electric Forest isn’t just an event that happens once a year; it’s a feeling that lives within everyone who’s experienced it.

The connections forged in the forest extend far beyond the festival gates, creating a global community united by the transformative power of music, art, and unconditional love.

Until next year, when the Forest Family reunites once again, the magic lives on in every “Happy Forest” greeting shared between old friends and new ones alike.
